I Heart Tofu

I've been experimenting with tofu. I'm sort of a mad-scientist in the kitchen with this stuff and I have yet to perfect it. I'm the best sushi rice cooker in the whole world, but tofu still vexes me. "Freeze it, then cook it" my friends say, and when I do that it is all wet and spongy. "Just bake it" they say, and then I burned it and it tasted wrong. Just plain wrong. So I don't know what to do. I got recipes off the internet, followed them to the letter, and mine tastes nothing like they claim their's tastes like. Either I'm a bad cook (which we know isn't likely) or they are a bunch of liars and their tofu is a spongy mess like mind. Ok, so I'm not a great cook.

I am probably having sushi tonight, but I'm not enjoying it like I used to. The guilt factor is so high that I know I'll be weaning myself off of it. I am still going strong elsewhere, but I am not eating as healthfully as I was before, so I sort of need to recommit to the Skinny Bitch. I'm not being a total crazy person, but I had a couple of Atomic Fireballs (sugar) and I had a sip of some soda (when I thought I might dehydrate in the car) and that is just unacceptable.

Best sandwich ever (other than the delicious Lone Star from Jimbos). Smart bacon, avacado and veganaise. Yum yum yum!!!

I Liked the Weekend So Much I Extended it to Wednesday

While it was nice to have a long weekend, it was also pretty annoying to be feeling sick and pressured in studying for my Econ test (which I'm still not understanding). I did some interesting stuff though and the weekend left me thinking about my relationships with friends and family and where I fall into it all. I didn't spent too long being introspective, but thought a lot about what I want in life. In case anyone gives a damn, here's what I did all weekend.

Friday: Mircea brought a movie over and we ate some yummy chinese food. The movie was Bound by Honor and it was surprisingly fantastic. It really got to me and I dreamed about it for several nights, but I really did enjoy it.

Saturday: Mircea and I took a two hour drive up to Fairfax to eat at Todai, which is a sushi/seafood buffet. It was very good and the price was right, so we gorged ourselves on sushi for our Valentine's lunch. We were going to go to a musuem, but we got confused on our directions, so we drove a total of 4 hours for cheap sushi, but it was a pretty good experience. We'll definitely go there again if we're in the area, but we probably won't make a day of it! We went back to his house and watched The Hand that Rocks the Cradle and he kept saying "wow, this woman (Rebecca DeMornay) really knows how to work it."

Sunday: I met Robyn, Andrew and Ben and we bowled in the afternoon and then met a friend up in Waldorf. It was pretty fun, but the main reason for us meeting the friend was for us to ask him to stop sexually harassing us all the time. He is constantly making sexual jokes (he's on our bowling team) and he seems slightly obsessed with me, calling me at all hours and drukenly telling me how great I am. We'll see if he gets the picture, otherwise, we're quitting bowling. That's sexual harassment and I don't have to take it!

Monday: More sushi with Ben. Watched a lot of Seinfeld. Took Mircea some chicken soup and cough drops because he was sick.

Tuesday: Studied all day for the Econ test, still don't completely get it, but I'll keep trying.

Wednesday: I'm ready to attempt the Econ test and can only hope for the best.

I Made Sushi (And I Lived to Tell About It)

Mircea and I are obsessed with sushi. OBSESSED. So naturally we eat a whole lot of it. We're not even picky. We like it all. The fancy restaurants, the market, hell, if someone was selling it on the street we'd probably buy it. So we started to make our own, and if I may say, it's at the very least, grocery store quality. I sort of have a knack for this thing. I bought my little "sushi deluxe" kit on Amazon, and it's awesome. Great book with lots of tricks and recipes, as well as some pretty nice little chopsticks with rests and some other stuff. The only thing I still need is a rice paddle, and I'll get that soon enough (I haven't had time to go back to the Asian market). I want to take a picture of it sometime because I think it is beautiful and it sure is tasty. I did have a Wasabi incident though and Mircea and I almost died, but other than that it was great. I made tuna rolls on Sunday and I'm making salmon rolls tonight. We'll probably die of mercury poisoning, but it's a risk we're willing to take!

The "L" Word

It may be too soon for me to be saying this, but I'm going to go out on a limb and be completely vulnerable here. I've said it too soon before and I've gotten burned, but I think that although we've been together for a short time, I am ready to use the L word...

I LOVE SAN DIEGO!! This place rocks! The beaches, the weather, the nightlife, the events-its just great! I love that everyone runs and has an active lifestyle (though I feel like a whale here) and there is just so much to do. I love the food-everything is fresh and wonderful and damn I love this place.

Today I'm going to venture out into town in search of some provisions, as my authorization to use the Commisary and Exchange are taking much longer than they ever have in the past. I am also going to stop for sushi at this little dive sushi place that apparently has the best on Coronado, so I'm pumped!
